The Pinterest board, the facebook snooping and googling start consuming as the first birthday gets closer and closer. When my children had their first birthdays, many years ago, we didn’t have Pinterest. I remember having to flip through books and use my imagination. If I had Pinterest back then, it would have made life so much easier.

Make the birthday reflect the heritage of your child. Our sweet friends adopted a little sweet girl and she her mom is Asian. My friend wanted to honor the birth mom as well as celebrate the heritage that her daughter has. An Asian tradition for the baby’s first birthday is called “birthday grab” which is done on their first birthday to “predict” what type of personality or career the baby may pursue as an adult by laying out different items that each represent a different path and see which one the baby gravitates too. What a unique way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday and make it personal to their heritage.
You line out several items that would represent a profession or a personality. Once you have them laying on the floor for the baby to see, let the baby down to crawl or walk over to them. The baby will choose an item. This game is supposed to give you insight into the personality and profession your child might choose. You might want to do it multiple times and see if they gravitate to the same one each time.

Create a time capsule.
Create a time capsule for a unique way to celebrate your child’s first birthday. This can be as simple as placing some important items in the capsule that your child loves at this time in their life to make it very personable.
One idea for your capsule is to send out with the invitations a “20 years in the future prediction” for each guest to fill out and bring to add to the capsule. You can download the free printable and print for your capsule. As everyone comes to the party have a basket for them to place the prediction sheets in.
Once you have collected all the items for the time capsule, seal it up and place it in a safe place that you can remember to give to your 20-year-old for their birthday.

Start a library for your child.
What a great time to start your child a library of special books. Invite your guest to come to the party with a special book for your child. In the book that they choose, have them write a special note to them. Your 1-year-old will have special books that will last a lifetime. Messages of encouragement that can be read over and over. Making this a unique way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday that will last many years to come and even become something to pass down.

A theme specific to your child
When you start to plan for the party, keep what your child enjoys in mind. Make the party unique to your child. Don’t get caught up in the popular themes. If your child loves to play with water toys, make it a water toy party. If your child loves to play with stuffed animals, make it a zoo party or a adopt a puppy party. Make the party special for your special 1 year old. This is a memory that you are creating. Don’t let it be a memory that was just trendy at the time but a memory that represents your child and the loves they have as a 1-year-old.
Don’t take it over the top
When you are planning your child’s birthday, be careful and don’t go overboard. This is just the first of many birthdays that you will get to celebrate. Don’t make this one so over the top that it will be hard to top it with birthdays to come.
