Fun things to make in the kitchen with grandkids. I absolutely love having my granddaughters in the kitchen with me. We have so many great conversations, learn so much together and make some big messes. My oldest granddaughter is 3 at the time I am writing this post. I have pictures of her sitting on my kitchen counter as early as 8 months helping me cook.
I don’t know about you but I am constantly looking for fun things to make in the kitchen with my grandkids. Especially things that are age-appropriate. There are sometimes, we have a plan and then there are some times that we invent cool things together.
It is so important to build memories with your grandchildren. I can ask my children what is one thing that they remember about my mom and both of them will refer to a memory in the kitchen with her 9 times out of 10. Being in the kitchen was fun but also memory-making.
5 Fun Things To Make In The Kitchen
#1
Cookies. This is probably the most popular thing to make in the kitchen with grandchildren. Everyone loves cookies. You can do so many different kinds. We love to make Chocolate Chip Cookies with sprinkles. But if you need something simple, you can purchase a Pilsbury Break and Bake roll and have fun without all the mess.
#2
Jello Jigglers This is so fun to make with the kids. The kids can always have a part in the making of the Jello Jigglers from start to finish. Another great thing about making Jello Jigglers, you have some gap time from the time you put them in the refrigerator to when they are set. This will give you time to get your kitchen picked back up before the Jigglers are ready to be cut. Grab your favorite cookie cutters and have some Jello Jiggler fun.
#3
Mini Pizzas This is a fun little recipe that really any age can do. You can make the pizzas on Naan Flatbread dippers or a piece of Texas toast. It really doesn’t matter what type of bread you use. Use what you have in the kitchen. All you need is a little sauce, cheese, and any other topping you want. Your grandchildren will love helping make lunch and it will be yummy too.
#4
Ice Cream In a Bag. This is such a fun thing to make in the kitchen, or where ever you want to dance, with your grandbabies. We love adding sprinkles and mini chocolate chips to our finished ice cream. We use the recipe from Susie at Busy Toddler
#5
Slime. Yes, slime. It is not really food but you make it in the kitchen and it brings hours of entertainment and fun to your grandkids. I remember when we first made this, my oldest grandchild was 2. She sat at the table for almost an hour just playing with the slime. We like to use Debbie’s recipe over at One Little Project. Also, it doesn’t use Borax.
The Mess Is Worth It All
The mess is worth it all when you are having fun in the kitchen with your grandbabies. Memories last forever and messes can be cleaned up.
But if you are remotely OCD and need to have it orderly, I would suggest these few steps to help keep your kitchen picked up as you go.
- Prep the ingredients that you need ahead of time and have them measured out ready for your grandkids.
- Fill your sink with warm sudsy water to clean little hand quickly and be ready for dishes to soak.
- After you put the item you are cooking in the oven, frig or table, immediately clean up your prep area.
- Make it a game to clean with your grandkids. Teach them it is not a negative to clean. Teach them that cleaning can be fun too!
Having fun with your grandkids makes memories
The whole purpose of having fun in the kitchen with your grandkids is to make memories. So be sure to take a lot of pictures to be able to look back on.
Talk about memories you have of your childhood experiences. This is a great time to share a part of the family history with your grandkids. Your grandkids will probably not have a book to read about the history of your family, so it is part of your job to tell them about the legacy you are handing off to them.
Tell your grandkids some funny stories about when their mom or dad was little and how you taught them different skills.
I hope this article has been an encouragement to you and also it has given you some ideas to start having some fun and memory-making times with your grandkids.
